To be or not to be VEG ??

It has been thirteen years since i last tasted meat ..... many have asked me if my religion actually had restricted me in anyway of such consumption... some even ask me whether it was my health that deprived me from the finger licking good chicken ...... i remain silent then, but today i have decided to answer these questions.

First of all, i feel that we should change our perception towards religion from a god fearing relationship to the guide to righteous living. As stated in my previous post, religion is a guide to live life righteously and that is its soul purpose of its existence.Hence, viewing it from that perspective, religion also guides one on proper and righteous eating habits. This is because food consumption is one of the main factors in living a healthy and righteous life. If your not aware, all religions have never restricted anyone from eating meat. However, some religion has only restricted the consumption of certain meat like beef and pork but had not completely ban the meat eating. Hence if you choose to be vegetarian on a friday just because you have to attend temple prayers, think again.Since religion is now not the reason to stop eating meat so why must we be vegetarian in the first place ???

Well being a vegetarian firstly shouldn't be forced upon. It must be a realisation that comes naturally when one realises the existence of our creator in all beings or attain the realisation of ahimsa. The reasons why one should observe vegetarian is due to its many benefits to health and spiritual practice. Lets start with health, studies have shown that vegetarians that follow a well-balanced low-fat high-fibre diet often have lower incidence of coronary artery disease, hypertension, obesity and some forms of cancer. This is because a vegetarian diet tends to be lower in total fat, and vegetarians tend to eat proportionally more polyunsaturated fat to saturated fat compared with non-vegetarians. Hence if you feel your growing fat, this is the best time to switch to a vegetarian diet ... kidding.

As for spiritual practices, many traditions promote vegetarianism because it helps in the stabality of the mind during meditation. The believe is different food types embody different types of vibrations. Meat embodies the consciousness of animals; this consciousness is more restless and aggressive. The consumption of this type of food will enable animal qualities of the meat to be transferred to some extent to the person eating the food. This will then effect one's subtle nerves and makes meditation more difficult. On the other hand, vegetarian foods do not carry this restless consciousness, it however carries a mild and peaceful vibration. This is a significant benefit of a vegetarian diet for those who is practising meditation.

In truth, there are more benefits to being a vegetarian which i cant cover ALL here. However, i know its impossible to give up meat totally in a short period of time, but if you have never had tried too, how would you have ever known. I always believe in the saying "Too much of anything at a time, will turn into poison". Hence i suggest that those who desire to be a vegetarian should start with slowly reducing the meat intake rather then cutting it off completely. Take your time and mean while make sure you eat a balance diet.

Remember this always " Your are what you eat "

Let me know what you think ??

I agree with the statement which says, " being a vegetarian shouldn't be forced upon. It must be a realisation that comes naturally "..

Its not a show of thing or done merely for religious and health purpose..

Its a way to DISCIPLINE ourselves..its a way to control our desires..

Therefore, lets realise and live a more discipline lifestyle with the help of good health and mind..
For things which are done without self-willingness and awareness is just a waste of time.. =)

Hi, I have done some thinking and hope youatleastspend time on this comment::

1) You have been vegeterian for 13 years, considering you be somewhere in your twenties or early thirties, I guess you were a small boy when you left eating meat. I think it was because of your parents or elders guidance rather than your own conscious Decision. Were you aware of consciousness then ? You would be really in a position to comment if you do something after being conscious? otherwise its ignorance or Blind following.

2) Paragraph 2 and 3 are bookish/internet knowledge. Please eat meat and meditate and then describe your experiences.

3) Eating Veg or non veg depends on the make up (nature- Gunas) of human. Spiritual aspirant does not have to leave it, but what really happens is as one dwells more and more in the path of spirituality the nature changes. That results in changes in eating habits, sleeping habits, actions , words, thoughts etc.

4) The greatestchallenge we humans face is our MINDS.
WHAT WE KNOW IS WHAT WE KNOW WITHIN THE BOUNDARIES OF THE LIMITATIONS OF OUR MIND. Think of it.
